First, think of an ultrasound device with 56 transmitters and 48 receivers, then imagine that array on a silicon chip 1.5 mm in diameter attached to a catheter guide wire with 13 cables for signal transmission. This is what engineers at Georgia Tech have developed for imaging in the heart, coronary arteries and peripheral blood vessels. As one of the researcher says: “This will give cardiologists the equivalent of a flashlight so they can see blockages ahead of them in occluded arteries. It has the potential for reducing the amount of surgery that must be done to clear these vessels.” MORE
