Shaping Light Pulses for 10x Data Transmission Rate
January 21, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
While wireless transmission capability is moving toward 1 gigabyte/second, wired capability is leaping ahead even more dramatically. Engineers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne have found a way to reduce the size of laser light pulses in optic fiber which increases data throughput by a factor of ten. In effect, this represents a 10x increase in bandwidth, just as medicine is beginning to think of healthcare communications as an “internet of things.” MORE
