The Heart of the Hospital
December 17, 2013 | Terry Sharrer
It’s a fair guess that the “heart” of the hospital of the future won’t be the ER or OR, but rather the data center where patients are profiled by their genomic and proteomic expressions, along with their changing physiology, medications, and procedural results as compiled in an electronic medical record. One example of this is Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City, a 1,400 bed facility that serves a half million patients annually. Besides its $120m EMR, and biobank that now holds DNA and plasma samples of 26,735 patients, Mt. Sinai has hired the first data scientist from Facebook, along with 150 other new employees, to input, expand and maintain the data center. MORE
