Sniffing Out Melanoma

For nearly fifty years, the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia has pioneered much in the molecular biology of smell and taste. Its most recent discovery involves a carbon tube nano-sensor with DNA strands that can detect volatile organic compounds which indicate early stage melanoma. So far, this work has only been done with tissue cultured cells—both normal melanocytes and those of melanoma—but to that extent, proof of principle exists for melanoma having a unique odor signature.
