Lots of laboratories expand stem cell lines, but it is a tricky business in which those cells often proceed to differentiation before reaching a necessary mass. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have found that chemicals which block a specific membrane surface receptor, CD 47, will allow stem cells to divide without differentiating until added growth factors cause the development to take place.
