Precision Acoustics: “Smart” Stethoscope

When patients undergo lithotripsy (using ultrasound to break up kidney stones), it can be difficult to determine if the stones have been reduced sufficiently to pass through the urinary tract. With a new “smart” stethoscope, however, physicians and engineers at the University of Southampton (UK) can listen for shock wave reverberations to tell if the treatment has been successful.
