Terrible experiences in war sometimes bring medical breakthroughs, as is the case with the world’s first robotic operation and custom fit joint. It began with a British soldier being shot in Afghanistan—the bullet fracturing both leg bones and knee, which usually resolves with an amputation. In this case, a London orthopedic surgeon used 3-D imaging to create a custom prosthetic and a robotic surgical device to precisely remove bone fragments. The result was a composite knee that aligned almost as well as a natural joint. MORE
