Eldercare Robots

In the 1950’s, engineer/inventor/entrepreneur Joseph Engelberger built the first industrial robot in the US and since has been called “the father of robotics.” Later on he envisioned personal robots that would assist elders in their daily chores. While hints of that actually happening are appearing more frequently, eldercare robots are still in waiting to take off. This piece reviews the ideas, successes and obstacles to personal robots becoming as common in homes as vacuum cleaners—which a robot already can operate. MORE
