Advanced POC Blood Testing w/Smartphone App
October 30, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
Many will remember 1992 when iSTAT introduced its point of care handheld blood analyzer that gave values for sodium, potassium, chloride, glucose, urea nitrogen and hematocrit in two minutes. A prototype device developed at the University of Rhode Island (Kingston, RI) now can detect a wide range of biomarkers, and while it takes a little longer than the old iSTAT, it has wireless data transmission to a smart phone. According to this piece: “The smartphone app turns the system on, monitors the assay, and sends the results securely back to your phone or to your doctor, all in about 20 minutes.” MORE
