Skin Patch for Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas

It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop a non-melanoma skin cancer (i.e. basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma) in their lifetime. Surgery and radiation are the traditional treatments. Now, radiologists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (New Delhi) have reported success with a radioactive phosphorous (P-32) skin patch that delivers 100 Gy (1 Gray=100 Rad) exposure to the malignant lesion. The patch is applied for three hours and then repeated once more four days later. Eight out of ten patients had no further cancer. MORE
