Stem Cell Approach to Fertility

Using ovaries that were removed from healthy females undergoing sex reassignment, cytologists at Massachusetts General Hospital were able to identify and extract ovary stem cells from tissue that had been frozen. These stem cells, unlike developed oocytes, can be refrozen and thawed without damage, and consequently, MGH has established an oocyte stem cell bank for transplants to women who have had ovary damage or removal.
