Implantable Microchip for Drug Delivery
May 22, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
Last year, MicroCHIPs, Inc. (Waltham, MA) carried out a clinical trial in Denmark of its implantable, wireless drug delivery device. About the size of a pacemaker, MicroCHIP’s design allows for programmable release of one or more drugs (though the Danish trial was for one drug used in treating osteoporosis). There were no adverse events for patients during four months of implantation. Future trails will address other conditions, like chronic pain, and may pair the drug chip with an implantable glucose monitor for managing diabetes. MORE
