Kidney transplant patients can take up to 25 drugs, every day for the rest of their lives, to suppress their immune system’s rejection of the donated organ. Researchers at the University of Louisville, however, have shown how to culture the donor’s bone marrow stem cells for implantation prior to the organ transplant, and thereby reduce or eliminate long term immunosuppressant drug use.
