Mayo Begins Large Scale Sequencing
April 10, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
DNA sequencing is a necessary, but not entirely sufficient step, toward personalized medicine. Providers have to figure out how to store, control access, and interpret that information. Trials to prove this entire chain are necessary, and to that end the Mayo Clinic has begun a large scale sequencing project. Some patient volunteers will have their entire genomes sequenced; others will have a genetic subset done, such as a group of 83 genes that are implicated in how the body metabolizes drugs. A comparison of the two will create a value benchmark. So, in effect, Mayo Clinic is teaching itself how to do genomic medicine, which others ought to observe. MORE
