Open Source Robotic Surgery Platform
March 13, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
With NSF funding, biomedical engineers at the University of California-Santa Cruz and the University of Washington have developed a two-arm “Raven II” surgical robot and built seven systems which they will distribute to other medical schools for further improvements via internet collaborations. Each machine has a surgeon-interface that permits remote operation. A four arm “Raven IV,” allowing two surgeons to work simultaneously, also is being developed. The first tele-surgical robotic operation, between a surgeon in New York and a patient in Strasburg, France was on September 7, 2001-“Operation Lindbergh.” MORE
