FIRST RELEASE – Printing a Prosthetic Jaw

Last June, biomedical engineers at Hasselt University (Diepenbeek, Belgium) used 3-D printing to fabricate a mandible that was implanted in an 83 year old woman-the first operation of its kind. The prosthetic jaw was made of laser-fused titanium powder and covered with a bioceramic coating. The patient was able to speak a few hours after her surgery and has had no complications since.
