The $1,000 Genome, Pretty Soon
February 7, 2012 | Terry Sharrer
Ion Torrent, a division of Life Technologies Corporation (Carlsbad, CA) is now taking orders for it’s “Ion Proton” DNA sequencer that can sequence a human genome in a day for $1,000. The machine itself costs $149,000 which places it within the reach of private physicians, though the early orders have come from medical schools and research institutes. The company expects to start shipping in the middle of this year. In a related story, Ion Torrent is developing a computational genomics product with Carnegie Mellon University called “Doc in a Box,” which aims to assist physicians with sequence interpretation.
