Automated Brain Blood Monitor

The signature combat wound of the Iraq War has been brain trauma, and as in previous wars, the military’s need has resulted in innovation for civilian illness. Whether the brain trauma comes from an explosive device or a car wreck, cerebral vasospasm (where the brain’s blood vessels constrict) can be life threatening. To address this, PhysioSonics (Bellevue, WA) had developed an ultrasound headset that continuously monitors vascular pressure for as long as the patient is at risk. The device uses an array of ultrasound beams that focus on the mid-cerebral artery and rely on an algorithm to automatically detect any buildup of pressure. MORE
