Two Assistance Robots for Hospitals
Today’s children, who have grown up with “Transformer” toys and videos about robots, may be conditioned to accept robotic assistance in their old age, but elders who need such things now may be resistant. We’ll see. In any case, the Japanese electronic giant, Panasonic, has recently previewed two robots-one that has arms and fingers for automatically washing hair, and the other, a robotic bed that transforms into an electric wheelchair (back and forth) for the hospital market (presumably including nursing homes too). Earlier, Panasonic introduced its HOSPI for automatic medication delivery and now has HOSPI-Rimo, a communications robot that allows bed-ridden patients to have two way voice and video contact with a doctor or family member. The list of robotic performers for hospitals keeps growing, hinting at “autonomous healthcare.” MORE
