Read this piece thinking not about performance athletes but of people in need of distance monitoring-e.g. CHF patients discharged from the hospital who might be readmitted in short order; those at risk for falls; people undergoing physical rehabilitation for joint replacement; even neonates in electronic “swaddling clothes.” That’s not to minimize the value of sensored clothing for millions of high school, college, and professional athletes, but this technology, which could be applied to soldiers, pilots, fire-fighters and others, represents healthcare as an information service, for sickness and wellness, that is fundamentally transformational.
