Dirk Timmermann, PhD, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of  Rostock, will present Software Integration of Medical Devices – An Important Issue in Modern Health Technology.

Dr. Timmerman is Vice Dean, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.  His research specialization is on embedded networked systems, web services for devices, wireless and sensor networks, pervasive computing, microelectronics and digital VLSI design.

Dr. Timmermann’s presentation will discuss that despite a proliferation of medical devices, there is a lack of communication standards for most medical and health devices.  Therefore, these devices are severely limited in terms of device cooperation across different manufacturers due to business strategy, legal, and safety issues and are missing technical interconnection solutions on a syntactic level. Thus, operators and users often still use “stone-age integration” of isolated health devices by printing results and feeding those into the other devices.  SEE FULL ABSTRACT
