New Artificial Lung

Scientists at the DVA Medical Center in Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University have taken a significant step toward creating an implantable artificial lung. They used silicone rubber to form artificial capillaries and a membrane that adds oxygen from air (not purified oxygen) and removes carbon dioxide in the blood of pigs. Their next challenge is to build a device big enough to handle the gas exchange load for an adult human. MORE
