Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education & Research is the title of an Institute of Medicine report released earlier this summer. Among its findings are that about 1/3rd of the US population suffers from chronic pain-more than the combined number of patients with cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. In medical bills and lost productivity, pain costs Americans between $560b and $635b, and 10% of all prescriptions for adults are for pain medications. These figures precede the oldest Baby Boomers reaching age 65. MORE
