A healthcare marketing research company projects that demand for home defibrillators will grow annually by more than 17% through 2014. Since 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home, having the right device at the right place could be a great life-saver. One of these devices-the Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator-costs $1,263, recently discounted from $1,995. This is neither an insignificant nor a prohibitive cost; so, the question is do advanced medical devices that are ordinarily found in hospitals have a place in “the hospital@home”? It would seem so.
