Near the end of chromosome 9’s long arm, the SET oncogene plays several roles in cellular function, including apoptosis, transcription, and DNA repair. In multiple myleoma, the so-called “MMSET” mutation allows harmful translations to occur between chromosomes 4 and 14 that then results in a proliferation of cells producing multiple myelomas’ distinctive “broken” antibodies.
