Compact Proton Accelerator
March 22, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
Proton radiation therapy offers an advantage over conventional x-ray radiation from better focusing. This poses less damage to non-targeted tissue. But, until recently, the footprint for a proton accelerator has been measured in acres rather than feet. Now, relying insulation design, nanoparticles and optical control switches developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA), Compact Particle Acceleration Corporation (Livermore, CA) has designed a “substantially smaller” structure for the accelerator track, though neither this piece nor others about CPAC’s accomplishment say exactly how much smaller.
