Indeed, the eye may be the window on health. Two recent developments illustrate how engineers are building electronic sensors and transmitters into contact lenses. At the University of Washington, Seattle researchers have devised a lens with a glucose monitor, for sugar in tears, that transmits data wirelessly. In Lausanne, Switzerland, Sensimed AG has designed “strain gauges” into lenses that also send data wirelessly to indicate effectiveness of glaucoma treatments. This device is meant to be worn for 24 hours once or twice a year. MORE
