Insurers Warming to Telemed

Aetna estimates that 40% of hospital readmissions are avoidable. MetroPlus Health Plan (NY, HMO) calculates that a Medicaid heart patient’s readmission costs $6,300, while renting a remote monitoring system, which can send a visiting nurse to address a problem before it becomes acute, costs $626. WellPoint, Humana, UnitedHealth and others are making the same sort of observations in demonstration projects and, consequently, are moving toward insurance coverage for telemedicine. MORE
