LivingWell@Home
Last month, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust (New York City) announced a $8.1m gift to the Good Samaritan Society (Sioux Falls, SD) for a sensor technology project named LivingWell@Home. This will place non-invasive wireless sensors in about 1,600 elders’ homes in the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska over the next two years. The technology, which tracks certain vital signs and movement by means of a bed mat, also has sensors that follow movements around a home and alerts for falls; it was developed by WellAWARE (Charlottesville, VA). There are no cameras or microphones in the setup. During the two year pilot, participants will have this service for free; afterwards, GMS estimates the cost will be about $400/month. The Good Samaritan Society is an evangelical Lutheran organization that operates assisted living, long term care, and home health facilities in the Midwest.
