Algorithm for Lower Dose CT Imaging
July 27, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Virtual colonoscopy, which uses a CT scan instead of the traditional probe, has the advantage of being non-invasive, but carries some risk, especially for patients who need multiple scans, from a cumulative radiation dose. The major CT manufacturers-GE, Siemens, Philips-have been working on algorithms that maintain image quality while reducing the amount of radiation, and recently GE’s solution-“Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction”-had good results, as reported from Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale, AZ. If this is “fuzzy math,” it took the “fuzz” out of the image with only half the radiation exposure. MORE
