Telemed and Quality of Life

Philips Electronics sponsored a study at a Spanish hospital that demonstrated the value of an interactive telehealth system for chronic heart failure patients who were discharged to their homes. Philips’ “Motiva” telemed device relies on a television set and broadband connection. In monitoring 92 patients, the interactive system, which provided educational and motivational support in addition to following clinical signs, resulted in a 68% reduction of readmissions and 72% reduction in the number of days spent in the hospital. Other telemedicine projects have demonstrated similar findings, but this study also showed very high patient satisfaction with monitoring that improved quality of life. MORE
