Plastic RFID Tags
May 11, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
This story described R&D work going on a Sunchon National University in South Korea to make a more receptive (but still passive) RFID tag. The Korean researchers have had success in printing these tags using nanoparticle-polymer inks, but the obstacle of doing so at a cost below one cent per tag-the commercial threshold-remains. Apparently, they are at the three cent per tag level. This report, however, does not mention how a small, replaceable battery, could be designed into these plastic tags to make them “active.” Currently, active RFID tags, used for Real Time Location Systems, cost in the neighborhood of $25 each.
