Novel Blood Pressure Monitoring

Empirical Technologies Corporation (Charlottesville, VA) has developed a non-invasive approach to tracking blood pressure-a technology the company calls “Pulse-Decomposition Analysis” under the trademark name “CareTaker.” A small cuff fits on the middle finger, with a cable running to a PDA-sized device that captures a BP value based on the timing and amplitudes of the primary left ventricular ejection pulse and the arterial pulse reflections. The device then sends the data wirelessly to a computer that does the calculations. While this is not yet FDA approved (other than for investigational study), it does suggest a way to get baseline BP when a person is asleep. MORE
