In another illustration of “disruptive innovation” the Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions predicts that the multi-billion dollar CME industry will be undermined as physicians increasingly turn to online sources for their continuing medical education. Currently, 9% of CME’s are provided via the Internet; the JCEHP expects that figure to rise to 50% by 2016. Dr. John Harris, Jr, at the University of Arizona says “We can expect far more changes in how CME is developed, distributed and probably paid for in the next 10 years than we have seen in the past 30.” And, a US Dept. of Education review found “. . . on average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.” MORE
