Smart coatings for Safer Surgical Implants

Professor Afsaneh Rabiei, in mechanical and biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University, has led a team in developing a “smart” coating for artificial knees and hips that contains a slowly dissolving layer of calcium and phosphate, with silver particles. The silver acts as an antimicrobial agent to inhibit infection immediately after surgery; the calcium and phosphate promote bone growth that improves bonding (called “osseointegration”). MORE
