April 20, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Princeton, NJ; largest US philanthropy devoted exclusively to health interests) recently awarded several $480k grants to research groups at San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and the Healthy Communities Foundation to gather information about the ways people live their daily lives-i.e. diet, exercise, sleep, medications, et al-so care providers might have greater insight into such problems as teenage obesity and depression, pre-term low birth weights, asthma, arthritis, and cognitive decline. The researchers are using smart phones and sensors to gather this information, which likely portends how preventative measures will be delivered. MORE
