Ultrasound Clot Busting
March 2, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
With an apparatus resembling a Gamma Knife, University of California, San Diego professor Thilo Hoelscher is experimenting with high intensity focused ultrasound to break up blood clots in the brain. The equipment comes from an Israeli company, InSightec, which has engineered a thousand ultrasound transducers in a collimator helmet. Focusing all those beams on a site 4 millimeters wide should bust clots in stroke victims, but trials on live humans have not yet begun. MORE
