Optical “Brain Pacer”
March 30, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Medtronic (Minneapolis), maker of numerous medical implantable devices, is researching a brain implant that causes neural stimulation from alternative blue (on) and yellow (off) light delivered to the right location with fiber optic wire. So far, this is in the animal study stage because the technique also requires gene transfer of a light-sensitive molecule to specific neurons. The name for this technology is optogenetic neuromodulation. MORE
