“Cellvizio” is the name of a small microscope that can be inserted into the colon or pancreatic bile duct to look for cell aberrations indicating cancer. The technical name is probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE), and its advantage over biopsy-taking and testing is that a cancer diagnosis can be made “on the spot” and dealt with immediately. Dr. Michel Kahaleh, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Virginia Health System, is the only physician in Virginia currently using this technology.
