At a meeting this fall, California cardiologist Eric Topol, who is director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute (San Diego) and chief medical officer of the West Wireless Health Institute (LaJolla), demonstrated several breakthrough devices for telemedicine: GE’s cellphone-sized “Immelt” handheld ultrasound instrument; iRhythm’s electrocardiograph that a heart patient can wear clipped to a pants belt; Corventis’ “smart bandaid,” and a sensored cap for personal electroencephalography. These may seem like “gadgets” but they hold healthcare economics in the balance. MORE
