Telemedicine: Listening for Newborn’s Heart Murmur

Using a Philips 5500 ultrasound machine, connected to a Librestream Onsight 2000R video device, and a secured communications network (provided by American Educational Telecommunications), doctors at a distant regional health facility were able to video conference over a neonate’s heart murmur with specialists at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, with the specialists being able to see the ultrasound images in real time. As it turned out, the murmur was not serious enough to have immediate and expensive air evacuation of the baby. MORE
