Most voice-recognition software programs focus on words and phrases, but Professor Sandy Pentland, at MIT’s Media Lab, has developed algorithms that scan for tone and speed of speech, as slow, halting monotones can indicate mental depression, in the same way that slight voice tremors can give early detection of Parkinson’s disease. A company in Charlestown, MA, Cognito Health, is commercializing Professor Pentland‘s discovery for telemedicine application. MORE
