$1m Cost Avoidance with RFID

A hospital might easily have in excess of one IV pump for every bed in its facility (not counting several more for every operating room), with each pump costing around $5k. Rentals fill the need when pumps aren’t available for one reason or another-but the most common reason for renting is simply that pumps can’t be found quickly. RFID applications-particularly Real Time Location Systems-can alleviate that problem and recently, Cooper University Hospital (Camden, NJ) determined that it’s cost avoidance, both for rentals and purchases, from electronically tagging its pumps amounted to $1m a year. Other hospitals, such as Bon Secours St. Mary’s in Richmond, VA, have documented the same benefit. MORE
