Designing Drug-Eluting Stents
January 28, 2009 | Terry Sharrer
There are currently only four drug-eluting stents under FDA approval, and their effectiveness or ineffectiveness have been called into question. One problem has been that the drug release function has been unpredictable-some vascular tissue receiving the desirable effect, others, not. To address this problem, MIT professor Elazer Edleman has created a computer simulation that shows blood flow dynamics in the stent region, which should assist in marshalling the thousands of different design features for more effective devices. In effect, this opens the possibilities of personalized stents. MORE
