Cancer: Worldwide, Killer #1
January 6, 2009 | Terry Sharrer
WHO reports that as soon as 2010, cancer will surpass heart disease as the world’s greatest killer. Its global incidence and mortality doubled in the last third of the 20th century, and will double again by 2020. Meanwhile, heart disease mortality has fallen since 1964, though survivors today tend to have more than one heart attack. Noting the rise in smoking as a risk factor in developing countries, the report mentions that 40% of the world’s smokers live in China and India. Cancer claims more lives around the world than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. MORE
