Genomes for Sale
October 7, 2008 | Terry Sharrer
For $350,000 you could buy New Zealand artist Charles Goldie’s last painting, or a 2009 ZR1 Corvette, or a upscale condominium in Las Vegas, or, in a silver box containing a thumb drive, your own genome. Knome (i.e. “know me”) in Cambridge, MA is now offering genome sequencing to invididuals; it extracts DNA from blood cells and has the sequencing done at the Beijing Genome Institute. When the results return, Knome arranges a symposium for its customers where scientists explain the significance the data. The company expects to do about 20 genomes per year. MORE
