Wendelin Stark Develops Antibacterial Plastic Film
September 23, 2008 | Terry Sharrer
Wendelin Stark, a chemical engineer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich has developed a film coating of calcium phosphate-encapsulating silver nanoparticles that is highly effective for inhibiting the growth of E. coli. The bacteria consume the calcium phosphate for nutrition, and then die from the silver portion-recalling pre-antibiotic times when silver was more commonly used as a germicide. Applications for food wraps and bandages are obvious. SEE
