“Logic Gate” Molecules

Queen’s University Belfast (Northern Ireland) Professor Prasanna de Silva is renowned for developing “catch and tell” fluorescent molecules that were the basis for blood diagnostic cassettes, but he has now created an extension of his original technology that can act as logic gates. Some of these molecules can perform simple calculations as well as carry numbers that could act as ID tags. In effect, this is a “lab-on-a-molecule.” Recently, Queen’s University Belfast surpassed both Oxford and Cambridge in the number of important chemistry articles most often cited. MORE
