Surgical Innovation
The explosion of technology in information systems and telecommunications has provided new approaches for age old problems. How to get the best information and medical care you can, where ever you are. While virtual presence is still a ways off, the ability to perform surgery on a patient separated from their surgeon is becoming a reality. This presentation will discuss telesurgery concepts and challenges to implementation, including communication and information systems. It will also highlight many of the activities that our research team at the University of Cincinnati has been involved in regarding telesurgery.
Learning Objectives
1) Describe the convergence of telecommunication, informatics and robotics that have enabled telesurgery
2) List the needs, opportunities and challenges of telesurgery
3) Describe the current and future research in this rapidly emerging field
4) Explain the impact that advanced networks and information system will have in improving the quality of and access to surgical care
