Patient Discovery – Individuality in Healthcare

CIT Complex
2214 Rock Hill Road, Herndon, Virginia 20170

Conference Overview

Diseases, as Hippocrates knew, are intellectual artifacts-generalizations about symptoms-that medicine has relied upon for centuries to assess sick people. But it is the sick individual that exits in nature, not the artifactual disease, and no two people are sick in exactly the same way. Molecular medicine has developed new tools for diagnosing individual conditions opening the way for personalized therapeutics. In a larger sense, though, personalized medicine implies that every patient is a clinical trial, and that the scope of illness extends to the patient’s social and economic individuality. Getting the diagnosis right in the first place, however, radiates throughout the continuum of care until the dis-ease reverts to ease. This is the meaning of patient discovery.
